ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE JUSTICE PROGRAMME

Climate change poses an existential threat to mankind and if unchecked, will affect life on the planet. With the ever increasing severity, vulnerable and marginalised groups all over the world continue to disproportionately bear its brunt. Their dignity and human rights continue to be violated. It is in this regard and also in response to Sustainable Development Goal 13 which requires the world to limit and adapt to climate change that EACHRights’ through the Environmental and Climate Justice Programme seeks to contribute to the reduction of the impact of climate change on vulnerable groups”.

We seek to ensure

  1. The respect and protection of Human Rights.
  2. The equitable sharing of benefits and burden.
  3. That decision making on Climate Change are rights based and therefore follow the PANEL principles, that is Participation, Accountability, Non-Discrimination and Equality, Empowerment and Legality.

We lobby and advocate for laws and policies that seek to ameliorate the impact by targeting the relevant institutions at international, regional, national and sub national levels.

Our interventions will mainly be around 2 focus areas namely –

  1. Climate Governance and Financing.
  2. Enhancing accountability mechanisms.

Under climate governance and financing, the programme shall support an enabling legal and institutional environment for Climate Justice at International, Regional, National and Sub National levels. Under enhancing accountability mechanisms, the programme shall strengthen the capacity of Kenyan civil society as independent watch dogs in climate governance and promote their participation including Women and Youth in policy-making processes, at the International, Regional, National and Sub National levels, to ensure that their voice are not only heard but also considered in the Climate Justice debate. The programme shall promote access to justice for survivors of violations by supporting engagement with redress mechanisms and review of jurisprudence around Climate Justice.
